Zelve Valley is situated about 10 km out from Goreme, where the Christians and Muslims lived together in perfect harmony until 1924. Zelve housed one of the largest communities in the region is an amazing cave town, honeycombed with dwellings, religious and secular chambers- like Geyikli Kilise (the Church with the Deer), Uzumlu Kilise (The Church with Grapes) and the Balikli Kilise (The Church with Fishes).

Devrent Valley also known as Imaginary Valley or Pink Valley, reveals many different rock formations . The small fairy chimneys in the valley form a lunar landscape, or moonscape, by their strange look. The valley also has many animal shaped rocks. It looks like a sculpture zoo made by nature.

Cavusin Village is one of the oldest settlements in the area. The Church of St.John the Baptist offers a panoramic view of the village which probably dates from the 5th century with paintings from the 6th, 7th and 8th centuries. Avanos is a center of terra cotta work of art since 3000 BC and it is a town you will be invited to visit a traditional pottery workshop, which is possibly set deep into the hillsides.

Avanos is set on the banks of the Kizilirmak, the Red River which is the longest river in Turkey and it does not only separate the town from other parts of Cappadocia, but also gives the supplies the clay for pottery. Ortahisar Village is famous for its friendly inhabitants, picturesque stone houses, narrow streets and lovely churches as well as the castle-like rock formation after which the town is named. This 90m high natural fortress, a prominent landmark in the region has partly crumbled away revealing some of its interior. Today it has been restored and the peak is accessible by a staircase. The Ortahisar Castle offers a magnificent panorama over the fairy chimneys of Hallacdere and the snowy peak of Mt. Erciyes.

Kaymaklı Undergrand City Tour

Pigeon Valley is a moderate walk in a green valley with many different rock formations and hundreds of pigeon houses carved into fairy-chimneys.

Uchisar is situated at the highest point in Cappadocia. The top of the Uchisar Castle, provides a magnificent panorama of the surrounding area with Mount Erciyes in the distance. Many rooms hollowed out into the rock are connected to each other with stairs, tunnels and passages. Many rock cut churches have been discovered not only on the outskirts of the castle but also inside it. The magnificent landscape around

Goreme has been formed from its solidified lava streams, its ash and tuff stone, all dating from the Neocene period. A result of thousands of years of continual erosion makes this area look like a lunar landscape. The fairy chimneys also have a great color variety. And Esentepe is the best point of this marvelous panoramic view.

Rose Valley is an isolated valley behind Urgup. It has beautiful rock formations with some great hidden rock-carved churches. The most interesting part of this area is the countless tracks connecting the small villages and towns through vineyards and gardens like a spider net. It is always possible to see villagers working in the area and offering grapes, apples or apricots to you.

The churches in the Valley can be divided into two groups;
The Ihlara group including the Agacalti,Purenli Seki, Kokar, Egritas and Yilanli churches that reflect Oriental influences, and Belisirma group, comprising Sumbullu church and others with Byzantine characteristics. The churches of the Ihlara group display scenes dissimilar to the scenes depicted in other Cappadocian churches. In fact, they are reminiscent of the early churches of Syria and the Coptic churches of Egypt. The texts in Ihlara group churches are unusually long. In this group special emphasis was laid upon Satan and women as the source of evil.

Selime is a town at the end of Ihlara Canyon and it has some cave churches around. The most important one is known as a Selime Cathedral which has been hollowed out of the rocks on a rather elevated site. We enjoy a 4 km. hike through the Ihlara Valley to arrive in the Belisirma Village and rock-cut churches, spread across a wild plantation, surprise you with their successfully painted representations from the Bible.

Derinkuyu Underground City is actually one of over 200 underground cities discovered in the Cappadocia region, but it is notable for being the biggest and the deepest. Spanning eleven floors with a depth of 85m, this ancient city can accommodate anywhere between 3,000 and 50,000 people. It contains many of the amenities that one would expect to see in any developed city of the time: family rooms, communal areas, stables, churches, wine and oil presses, chimneys to bring fresh air, wells to bring fresh water, a school complete with study rooms, and even makeshift tombs where the dead could be housed until such a time that Derinkuyu’s dwellers felt it was safe enough to venture to the surface.

The rock cones found on the sides of the valley were used a graves by the Romans, and later as churches by the Byzantines. The frescoes in the church date back to the 9th and 13th centuries. Important churches in the valley are Karabas, Yilanli, Kubbeli and the church of St. Barbara ( Tahtali )

Taskinpasa Medrese built by the Karamanids (a 14th century dynasty in Konya, that dominated this part of Anatolia for almost 250 years). Its portal, the mihrab in its mescid its door and windows were laid using stone cut into blocks whereas rough stones were used in building the walls. Although its upper story has completely collapsed it is understood from the flight of stairs to the left of the entrance that it had at least two stories. The impressive stonemasonry seen on the portal on the western side is in classical Seljuk style. The portal is decorated entirely with geometrical and floral designs.

Keslik Monastery was hollowed out in the 13C, and known as the Monastery of the Archangels, has retained two churches and its refectory. The Black Church comprises two parallel naves, both of which end in an apse. To one side lies the refectory, a huge room which could house 100 people and which is divided in two by arcades. Dug out from the rock in the 9C, the Church of St Stephen is situated 50m from the monastery. The most beautiful frescoes, painted in shades of bright yellow and orange, can be seen in this church

Sobesos is another place where a few years ago the only Roman mosaics in central Anatolia were found. Excavations are in the early stages but the quality and state of the mosaics is excellent.

Sinasos Village is the small village of Mustafapasa. It has old Greek houses with attractive carved facades dating back to the end of the 19th century, and a cluster of small churches, once known as Sinasos when it was a thriving Greek community before World War I. Places of interest include a 19th century medrese, the Ayios Vasilios Church, and the Church of St. Constantine and Helena. Townswomen here still bake their family`s flatbread in community ovens; each household has an assigned day.
